Split off from Barmer district on 7 August 2023. For decades Balotra town has been one of India's leading centres for cotton and polyester textile processing, dyeing and printing, supplying roughly 90% of the country's petticoat cloth, though the industry's effluent discharge remains a persistent environmental challenge.
