Rajasthan's northernmost district and agricultural breadbasket, irrigated by the Gang and Indira Gandhi canals that turned Thar scrubland into wheat, cotton and citrus (kinnow) farmland after Independence. Named for Bikaner's Maharaja Ganga Singh, who commissioned the Gang Canal in 1927.
