Known as the 'District of Lakes' for its dense network of irrigation tanks, and as Maharashtra's 'Brass City' for a centuries-old bell-metal and brassware trade run by Kasar and Panchal artisan families, though cheaper steel and aluminium have eroded demand since the 1980s. It also produces Kosa (tussar) silk and shares the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve with Gondia.
