Founded in 1490 by Ahmad Nizam Shah as Ahmednagar and renamed Ahilyanagar in 2023 to honour the 18th-century queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Nearby Pravaranagar hosted Asia's first cooperative sugar factory (1950), and the district remains a hub of sugar and cooperative-dairy enterprise.
