STATE CAPITAL Area 2,772 km²; population 2,371,061 (2011); density 855/km²; literacy ~80-82%; urban share 80.85%. Known as the "City of Lakes" for its Upper and Lower Lakes (Bhoj Wetland). Site of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. Home to AIIMS Bhopal, NIT Bhopal (MANIT), IISER Bhopal, and BHEL's major manufacturing unit. Founded/associated with legendary king Raja Bhoj and developed by Afghan general Dost Mohammed Khan; ruled 1819-1926 by four female Begums.
