Old Delhi

The newest and most historic of Delhi's 13 districts, carved out of Central Delhi's Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar subdivisions on 1 January 2026 to give the congested walled-city core its own dedicated administration, aligned with its municipal zone. No independent population or area figure exists yet for this boundary. Comprises the heritage core of Shahjahanabad: the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, the Khari Baoli spice market (reputed to be Asia's largest), Fatehpuri Masjid, Gurudwara Sisganj, the Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, the Dariba Kalan jewellery lane, and the Nai Sarak paper-and-book trade. A dense wholesale-and-retail trade economy (spices, hardware, electronics, jewellery, textiles) sits layered over a historic residential quarter. Served by the Yellow Line (Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar) and the Violet Line (Lal Qila/Red Fort, Jama Masjid), with the Kashmere Gate interchange just across its border.
