North East Delhi

Delhi's smallest district by area (62 km²) and its most densely populated (36,155/km², against a citywide average nowhere close), with 2,241,624 people at the 2011 Census; literacy 83.09% (male 88.80%, female 76.71%); sex ratioThe number of females per 1,000 males in a population — a key demographic indicator in Indian census data. 886; 68.2% Hindu, 29.3% Muslim. Following the January 2026 reorganisation it absorbed part of the dissolved Shahdara district, which had its own separate 2011 count of 322,931 across a similarly dense urban footprint (roughly 59,700/km²) including Vivek Vihar and Seemapuri. The district includes Seelampur, Mustafabad, Karawal Nagar, Dilshad Garden, and Yamuna Vihar, and sits near the Akshardham Temple. Served by the Red Line (Welcome interchange) and the Pink Line (Shiv Vihar terminus, Yamuna Vihar, East Azad Nagar). It was also the site of the February 2020 North East Delhi riots.
