Uttar Pradesh

At a Glance

Uttar Pradesh is a paradox written at continental scale: a state so populous that if it stood alone it would be the fifth-largest country on Earth, anchored in the Gangetic plain that has hosted more of India's civilizational history than any other tract of land, yet ranking near the bottom of India's states on per-capita incomeAverage income per person — total income (often GSDP) divided by population.. It is where the Ramayana's Ayodhya, the Buddha's Sarnath, the Mughals' Agra, and the Nawabs' Lucknow all sit within a day's drive of each other — and where, in the same breath, 21st- century electronics factories in Noida and a nascent defence-manufacturing corridor are trying to out-run a demographic wave that keeps arriving faster than jobs can be created for it.

WORLD'S MOST POPULOUS SUB- NATIONAL JURISDICTION

Uttar Pradesh's population makes it not only India's most populous state but, were it an independent country, the world's fifth most populous nation — bigger than Brazil, and nearly the size of Nigeria.

Snapshot. UP is governed as a single state within India's federal structure, with a bicameral legislature (Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad) seated in Lucknow and the Allahabad High Court (with a bench at Lucknow) as its apex judicial authority. It is organized into 18 administrative divisions and 75 districts — the most of any Indian state — a structure that has been redrawn repeatedly since Independence, most consequentially in 2000 when its Himalayan hill districts were carved off to form Uttarakhand. UP sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha, more than any other state, making it the single biggest prize in Indian national politics. It is known, in roughly equal measure, for being the religious and cultural heartland of Hindi-belt India (Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura, Prayagraj's Kumbh Mela), for the Mughal and Nawabi monuments that anchor its tourism economy (the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Lucknow's Bara Imambara), for its sheer demographic and electoral weight, and — less flatteringly — for a per-capita incomeAverage income per person — total income (often GSDP) divided by population. that has long lagged the national average even as its aggregate GSDPGross State Domestic Product — the total value of all goods and services produced within a state in a year. ranks among India's largest three economies.
