Kerala

At a Glance

Kerala is a narrow coastal strip wedged between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, unified in 1956 from the princely states of Travancore and Cochin plus Malabar district of Madras Presidency. It is best known for the "Kerala Model" of development — near- universal literacy and life expectancy rivaling wealthy nations, achieved on a historically modest income base — and, more recently, for riding a wave of Gulf remittances to among India's highest per-capita incomes even as its industrial base stays thin.

Kerala pioneered near-First-World literacy and life-expectancy outcomes on a historically low income base — a development pathway economists call the “Kerala Model,” rooted in an 1817 Travancore royal decree mandating education for all, including women and lower castes.

Snapshot

Kerala is governed as a standard Indian state with a unicameral 140-seat Legislative Assembly, and is nationally distinctive for a two-front political system that alternated the Left Democratic Front and United Democratic Front in power almost every election cycle from 1980 through 2026. It is known worldwide as "God's Own Country" for its backwaters, tea-plantation hill stations and Ayurveda-tourism industry; for electing the world's first democratically elected Communist government in 1957; for a Gulf-migrant diaspora whose remittances rival the state's own tax revenue; and, increasingly, as a preview of India's demographic future — the country's most aged population and lowest fertility rate, arriving decades ahead of the national trend.
